New York divorce: Frankel announces separation from husband

Bethenny Frankel is a well-known celebrity around New York and the rest of the nation. While many know her from her Real Housewives days or her line of Skinnygirl cocktails, she is now making headlines after she announced she was going through a divorce. However, their divorce does not appear to be shaping up to be a friendly affair.

Frankel reportedly has requested primary custody of their daughter, child support and insurance expenses. Her husband has since fired back with his own petition and is requesting the exact same things from her. He also has requested their marital home be awarded to him and for her to cover his legal costs for the divorce.

The almost identical petitions could result in bitter and lengthy court battle. The majority of divorce cases do not end up in court, but when couples cannot agree on a settlement, a court may have to step in and ultimately decide the case. There has been no word on whether Frankel's fortune could be up for grabs but that could be a possibility if they had no prenuptial agreement.

When a New York marriage ends in divorce, it can cause emotional strain and sometimes financial difficulty. Sometimes, communication about the settlement can fall short, resulting in the need for court intervention. Couples embroiled in a divorce may want to seek assistance so they can ensure they receive the entitlements allowed under state law. Failing to do so could result in an unfair settlement or bitter feelings against one another.
