We discussed Kobe Bryant's divorce last month, but this week some details leaked regarding the basketball star's split from his now-ex-wife Vanessa. The Los Angeles Times reported that Vanessa's mother told them the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement and that her daughter stood to make quite a bit of money should the couple end file for divorce.
Kobe and Vanessa kept the details of their divorce private, but many estimated a $75 million windfall for Vanessa. Now it is known that roughly $18.8 million in real estate was transfer to Kobe Bryant's ex-wife in December, and there could be more on the way.
A $2.9 million mansion was transferred to Vanessa on December 14, despite the Bryants sharing ownership of the home since 2003. Later in December, a home valued at $4.7 million was signed over to Vanessa from Kobe Bryant. But the coup de grâce is an estate that is valued around $11.2 million in the Resort at Pelican Hill. Recently the property was under construction, but it was given to Vanessa in the middle of December. Kobe Bryant's agent previously owned the estate.
California is one of nine states that recognize community property. The law gives each party in a divorce an equal share of ownership of any property accumulated during their marriage. However, a judge can alter the ownership interest at his or her discretion based on a variety of factors.
When considering divorce, seek an experienced attorney to support your case. A reputable legal representative will give you all the details on community property, and the guidance and support given by your lawyer could minimize the financial damage to you as you begin to heal during an emotional time.
